When We Were Young...

A tribute to 90s Nickelodeon

Who can forge the lovable cartoons we sat down every afternoon to watch? When I was growing up, all of the kids on my block would run inside after school to watch our favorite (and on many occasions seriously gross) cartoons: Rugrats, Doug, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life and Hey Arnold!

The cartoons were followed by parent-friendly family programming: Double Dare (and Family Double Dare), GUTS (and later, Global GUTS), Legends of the Hidden Temple, Figure it Out, Wild and Crazy Kids, Get the Picture, Welcome to Weinerville and What Would You Do?

Next came the "young adult" programming and the much-loved SNICK: Salute your Shorts, Hey Dude!, The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Are you Afraid of the Dark?, Clarissa Explains it All, All That and Round House (I've only found one other person who remembers this show!)

So, this wasn't my most informative post, but if you loved these shows then I'm sure you'll agree that there is just far too much to say about each and every one of them! Enjoy the memories.

Flash-Forward
*You can catch some of these great shows on NickGAS if you have cable/sattellite (Legends of the Hidden Temple, GUTS and Global GUTS, Figure it Out).
*Disney eventually gained the rights to "Doug" and aired it on ABC on weekend mornings. Don't get me started though, they absolutely butchered the show!
*They also (apparently) continued making episodes of "All That" for several seasons, but with a sub-par cast. I refuse to watch.
*While Nickelodeon still broadcasts popular kid's programming, I doubt that "Hannah Montana" could ever be as good as 90s Nick :)

OMG! I loved 90's Nickelodeon. I was at my friend's house last weekend and we watched Global GUTS and Legends of the Hidden Temple. I was in heaven! Although, going back and watching those shows makes you realize how ridiculous they were. That doesn't stop me from wanting a piece of the Agro Crag or that blue barracuda shirt... I wonder what all those pieces of Agro Crag are doing now...

These shows were my all time favorites! I looked forward to coming home every day and watching Legends of the Hidden Temple, Salute your shorts, Rugrats, the list goes on! What a fun and creative post this is, and boy does it bring back memories! Probably for the amount of time Legends of the Hidden Temple was on, I wanted to be a contestant. Now with the Time Warner package of every channel imaginable on it, you can watch all the shows you listed! My brother and I go to my aunts during the holidays just to watch this specific channel, its like we're kids again.

I knew people would want to comment on this post! I've seen Pete & Pete DVDs, and I have to say that show is the MOST ridiculous! About 4 years ago my boyfriend and I were watching the return of Ren & Stimpy (yes, they brought old episodes back, but for a very brief period of time) but they were seriously so disgusting that we turned it off after about 10 minutes!

If you search YouTube, there are so many videos dedicated to the great shows of 90s Nick...miss it so much! Haha.

As for the Agro Crag (& the less memorable Mega Crag from regulat GUTS [I do remember this crap haha] they are selling pieces of it on ebay occasionally. I was looking for one as a gift for my boyfriend for the last three years and he ended up finding one and bid on it (I was furious! that was my perfect gift! Don't worry, he was outbid by alot haha)

OMG I can't believe someone else my age remembers Round House! That and Clarissa were my favorites! I still remember the Snick lineup was 8pm-Clarissa 830-Round House 9- Ren and Stimpy and 930- Are You Afraid of the Dark. I remember fighting to stay up late enough, and how Are You Afraid of the Dark scared me.

I also loved Pete and Pete, Alex Mac, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Salute Your Shorts, Doug, Rugrats, Double Dare, and early All That

It's sad the only thing I like on Disney now is Spongebob, I encourage the kids I babysit for to watch it instead of Hannah Montana ugh!

I love this post! I am always craving a good Doug or Ren and Stimpy session. Those were great shows and I feel like the cartoons and shows they have geared towards kids today are not nearly as good! I'll admit it, I have seen Hannah Montana a few times but it doesn't even begin to compare to The Amanda Show or Kenan and Kel, that was the good stuff! Hahaha I love that you bid on a piece of the Agrocrag!!

Ahhh I forgot about "The Secret Life of Alex Mac!" Someone was just talking about it at a party I went to over Thanksgiving break actually, haha!

I can remember watching "Are You Afraid of the Dark" with a boy I was friends with when we were really young (5, 6 years old?) & he hid during the scary parts but I watched them all, lol! Wasn't the intro the scariest part? Creepy!

The problem with cartoons today is that they're all geared toward learning or positive values (ie: Dora the Explorer? Isn't she educational? I've never watched). Shows like "Ren & Stimpy" had one message...to ignnore personal hygiene and be as disgusting as possible, haha! What's not to love about our generation? ;)

Sidenote: Does anyone remember Stick Stickly? A friend and I still sing the mail song sometimes (wow, sad haha)

"Write to me, Stick Stickly
P.O. Box nine-six-three
New York City, New York State
one-oh-one-oh-eight!"

Can I just say that I wanted to dress as if I was straight out of Clarissa Explains it All just about every day of my childhood. And one of my favorite memories as a kid was when I got to see Double Dare live. People tend to be jealous when they hear about that.

Also, Hannah Montana and The Jonas Brothers ain't got nothin' on 90's Nickelodeon

(1) WHen I was little I DID try to dress like Clarissa - neon leggings under denim shorts w/high tops. It was pretty badass 8)
(2) I AM SO JEALOUS! I can't believe you were in the "Double Dare" audience! I always wanted to be in the "What Would You Do?" audience. That's so awesome haha!

I'm thinking about Ahhh! Real Monsters! Something in it just seems like a really hard attempt at a spiritual successor to Ren and Stimpy. I know it'll never match up, but it was a great try! Ick and Krumm were disgusting.

Personal hygiene in a sewer?

JJRegan said...

I know I watched "Ahhh! Real Monsters" but I can't remember much about it. I can, however, picture the 3 main characters (& their professor - with the red high heels haha) and they were pretty gross. Didn't Krum have really gross armpit hair? Yuck.

90s Nick is quite sweet! I loved Global Guts! That Mike O'Malley guy is on that new show with Christian Slater and I cannot take him seriously all I want him to say is "And Now Back to MO!"

JJRegan said...

Haha, Mike O'Malley. My favorite part of global guts are the spotters (see the videolink in my blogpost). It's so funny- the clip is a collage of all of the sunny things that the spotters do when you're not paying attention to them.

I hate Hannah Montana and her receding gum line. I agree with you the shows of our generation were so much better. Pete and Pete, Camp Onna Wanna, and Legends of the Hidden Temple were all classics in my mind. I just think the shows today are really creepy...what do you think?

JJRegan said...

I've never actually seen Hannah Montana...I mostly just can't stand the way people think it's acceptable to play Miley Cyrus songs at parties, etc. haha. I don't watch Nickelodeon anymore either (clearly, since I couldn't even come up with a Nick show to make fun of...Hannah Montana is Disney right?) so I can't really say anything about them being creepy, lol. Based on the newer episodes of "Rugrats" and the show where they're older, I'll go with yes :P

I would like to have a record of how much time I spent watching Nickelodeon, it probably has consumed at least a year of my life. Either Nick never made a bad show or I have bad taste in TV programming.

I catch old Nick-toons when I'm channel surfing and the nostalgia definitely kicks in. It seems like these 90's cartoons were in a league of their own, seeing modern day cartoons just don't seem to cut it. Cartoons now-a-days seem like 30 minute advertisement's for toys. Shows seem to be created to go along with a product already in the market. Maybe this was happening to us when we watched 90's cartoons, we were just too young to realize it.

JJRegan said...

I'd have to say that Nicktoons probably consumed about 5 years time haha! And no, Jon, you do not have poor taste in cartoons. Based on how many Nickelodeon lovers commented on this post, I'd have to say you're in the majority haha

I still til this day love watching those cartoons...its even funny to see my little brother growing up watching them as well.

I would have to say that Doug was one of my favorites..

Getting the chance to be home over break I get to see a couple other things that kids watch now days and the shows get wierder and wierder. Of course every little kid loves to watch hannah montana and those shows but idk I feel like alot of these shows now days they make these kids look waaay to old...like damn its too cool to be a kid anymore they make them grow up so quick!

That What Would You Do? video pretty much made my life. I watched that show religiously everY Saturday and wanted to be on it so badly!

A lot of people don't get why shows like that were popular but they just seemed to emphasize why being a kid was FUN! Instead they slid into this mindframe that everything had to be slick and cool. Glad I got to enjoy it while it lasted.

I think that the prizes were the best part about all of the game shows on Nick. Third place would be a hideous pair of Sketchers (which was a new brand at the time), second would be a Huffy bike (haha, I totally had a Huffy) and first would be a boombox..sometimes it was a really good prize, like a vacation or something!
